CHEMICAL ANCHORS

What is a Chemical Anchor?
Chemical or resin anchors are generic terms relating to steel studs, bolts and anchorages which are bonded into a substrate, usually masonry and concrete, using a resin based adhesive system.
Ideally suited for high load applications, in virtually all cases the resulting bond is stronger than the base material itself and as the system is based on chemical adhesion, no load stress is imparted to the base material as with expansion type anchors and are therefore ideal for close to edge fixing, reduced center and group anchoring and use in concrete of unknown quality or low compressible strength.
Although there are many differing variations and delivery systems in the market, all systems operate using the same basic principle with the base resin, requiring the introduction, by mixing, of a second component to begin the chemical curing process, hence the term chemical anchor.

EPOXY FLOORING SYSTEMS

Epoxy is a term that's come to represent a class of materials and the act of using those materials. Epoxy “systems” are based on a combination of resins and hardeners. When mixed together, the resin and hardener chemically react to form a rigid plastic material. The final material is strong, durable, resistant, and bonds extremely well to most base layers. Epoxy floors are so strong that they’re often used in heavy traffic areas such as industrial environments, hospitals, or sports facilities.
Types of Epoxy Flooring Systems
Self-Leveling Epoxy Floors – Self-leveling epoxy is applied over new, old, cracked, or damaged concrete floors to create a smooth, seamless, durable, and low maintenance flooring surface. The self-leveling system is also available in a variety of colors. Colors are used to make decorative designs, denote traffic patterns, or highlight work zones in industrial settings. This system is used when you need aesthetic appeal and/or abrasion, chemical, heat or slip resistance.
Application areas: manufacturing facilities, warehouses, showrooms, commercial garages, kitchens, aircraft hangars, athletic facilities, and more.
Epoxy Mortar Floors – Ultra-tough, this is the strongest epoxy floor system available. This high-build, seamless system is made with 100% solids epoxy and graded sand or quartz sand and then troweled into place. Mortar systems are highly impact and chemical-resistant. This system is also effective in repairing old floors because of its high-build process.
Application areas: manufacturing plants, mechanical rooms, warehouses, commercial kitchens, restaurants, garages, and service areas where heavy equipment, such as forklifts, would be used.
Quartz-Filled Epoxy Floors – Quartz epoxy flooring systems combine high-performance epoxy polymer resin with colored quartz grains. The result is a multi-functional floor that’s decorative, sanitary, slip-resistant, and exceptionally durable.
Application areas: locker rooms, restrooms, schools, cafeterias, showrooms, light manufacturing, lobbies, offices, and more.
Anti-Static Epoxy Floors (ESD Resistant Floors): Electro-static charge (ESD) can be extremely dangerous in many work environments. Anti-static epoxy flooring helps to reduce static hazards. This flooring system typically contains a conductive material that accumulates static electricity to drain, ground, or dissipate any potential discharge. It’s highly recommended in environments that contain flammable materials.
Application areas: Healthcare facilities, electronic, chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities; areas that use flammable gases or liquids or risk combustible dust buildup.
Epoxy Flake Floors: Flake floor systems are made when colored chips or flakes are placed within the epoxy to create vibrant, multi-hued, seamless, resilient surfaces. The chips are not only aesthetically pleasing, but their slightly rough surface reduces slips and falls. The flakes are available in an endless variety of colors, styles, textures, and sizes and can be mixed into the combination of your choice.
Application areas: commercial kitchens, sports venues, automotive showrooms, veterinarian clinics, and more.

CONCRETE ADMIXTURES

What is an admixture? An admixture is any ingredient that if added to a reaction will change the rate of reaction or the properties of the original products. They can be Natural or synthetic (that is manufactured in the laboratory)
Concrete admixture- concrete admixture refers to an ingredient other than water, cement and aggregate that when added to concrete will change its properties depending on the user needs.

There are five major categories of concrete admixtures:
  • Water reducing admixtures
  • Retarding admixtures
  • Accelerating admixtures
  • Super plasticizers
  • Corrosion inhibiting admixture

WATER REDUCING ADMIXTURES:
This admixture is useful when one requires a higher strength concrete with less amount of water used during its formation. This type of admixture tends to reduce the water cement ratio by about 5% to 10%. They also improve the concretes plastic (wet) and hardened properties.
RETARDING ADMIXTURES
Slows down the setting of concrete, mainly used to counteract the accelerating effect of the hot humid temperature that increases setting of the concrete. They delay the setting of the cement and have little or no effect. Retarding plasticizing admixtures not only delay the setting of the cement but are also efficient plasticizing water-reducers. Most commercially available retarders are of this type
ACCELERATING ADMIXTURE:
Mainly used to increase the rate of early strength developments while reducing the time period for curing, they also function by increasing either the rate of stiffening or setting of the concrete or the rate of hardening and early strength gain to allow earlier form work striking and demoulding. Most accelerators achieve one rather than both of these functions. Hardening accelerators are most effective at low temperature. Accelerators can be used with super plasticisers where early age strength is required, especially at lower temperatures. Concrete containing an accelerator will set faster than the equivalent plain concrete. The reduction in setting time is typically 1–2 hours but is affected by accelerator type, dose and temperature.
SUPER PLASTICISERS
Also known as High-range water reducers (HRWR), When used properly, they can increase the strength of the concrete and provide greatly increased workability without adding more water. HRWR are commonly used to produce flowing, self-consolidating, or high-performance concrete. They should reduce the water requirement by at least 12%—with ACI reporting possible reductions as high as 30%—and meet the requirements of ASTM C 494 for Type F and G water-reducing admixtures or ASTM C 1017. While the effects are often less with low- and mid range water reducers, super plasticizers' uses in different types of concrete projects demonstrate the important role of water-reducing admixtures.Super plasticizers can be effective, for example, when making high-strength concrete (6000 psi or more) and are added to mixes with water-cement ratios below 0.35 to ensure control of the water and again in the field for placing purposes. HRWR's effect of early strength gain in concrete and easy placement has been recognized by the pre-cast industry. They are also commonly found in self-consolidating concrete. Added to architectural concrete mixes, they increase the concrete's workability and prevent bug holes.
CORROSION INHIBITING ADMIXTURE
Corrosion-inhibiting admixtures can significantly reduce maintenance costs of reinforced concrete structures throughout a typical service life of 30 to 40 years. Although corrosion-inhibitors can raise the corrosion threshold, they are not an alternative to impermeable durable concrete.
Corrosion-inhibiting admixtures have little effect on strength at either early or later ages. The function of this type of admixture is to enhance the long term durability of reinforced concrete by enhancing passivation to the cathodic and/or anodize areas of embedded steel. Structures built in the 1970s with calcium nitrite still contain the original level of nitrite and show no signs of deterioration. The addition of corrosion-inhibiting admixtures based on calcium nitrite or amino alcohol does not affect the long-term durability of the base concrete but can offer extended life to the overall structure.

EPOXY BONDING ADHESIVE

Epoxy is created by a polymerization reaction between a mixture of two starting compounds, the resin and the hardener (catalyst). Epoxy adhesives adhere to a wide variety of materials and their properties are dependent upon the specific chemistry of the system and the nature of cross linking
available.
There are two main types of epoxy systems
  1. One - component system
  2. Two – component system
One component epoxy adhesives are generally cured at temperatures between 250-300°F, conditions that engineer a product of high strength, excellent adhesion to metals, and outstanding environmental and harsh chemical resistance. In fact, this product is often used as an alternative to welding and rivets. One component systems are formulated pre-catalyzed and require only moderate heat to cure, improving efficiency and avoiding error that may result from air entrapment. Furthermore, the speed of cure is rapid—faster than two component systems.
Two component epoxy systems differ in that catalyzation occurs at ambient temperatures and can be accelerated by heat. Adding heat also promotes additional cross-linking resulting in superior properties. Two component systems are suitable for bonding most surfaces. They are considered highly stable due to their ability to withstand a constant weight or force over an extended period of time, as well as their resistance to physical and chemical influences. In addition their powerful ability to withstand a constant weight or force over an extended period of time, as well as their superb resistance to physical and chemical influences, make two-component epoxies a highly stable product. They are extremely versatile, and can be used for bonding, sealing, coating and encapsulation across many industries including but not limited to electronics, medical devices and aerospace. Special formulations are also flame retardant, cryogenic ally serviceable, fast curing, high temperature resistant and more.
The two systems have different applications that our professionals at East African Flooring using the latest technology can be able to recommend without any hesitations. For more information our contact details are highlighted below

CORROSION INHIBITING ADMIXTURE

This admixture is specifically used to inhibit corrosion in reinforced concrete. Although reinforced concrete is generally a better construction material than the ordinary concrete , it's still brittle and liable to crack: in tension, reinforced concrete can fail in spite of its steel reinforcement, letting water in, which then causes the concrete to fail and the steel bars (re bar) to rust. Corrosion occurs in the presence of moisture, oxygen and an electrolyte. As chlorides attack the reinforcing steel, the salt intensifies the electrolyte properties of concrete, thereby creating a corrosion cell. As the corrosion reaction occurs, rust is formed. It migrates away from the reinforcing bar, leaving more iron to be corroded. This process continues and two situations develop:
1. The reinforcing bars disintegrate, which reduces the flexural strength of the concrete structure.
2. Iron, as it oxidizes, expands to four times its original volume. This expansion results in physical disruption of the concrete. Typical results are cracks, stains, crazing, spalling and pot holes; all of which are safety hazards.
The solution to corrosion in reinforced concrete is to add a corrosion inhibiting admixture to the concrete during batching. This will make the steel bars embedded in the concrete to be corrosion free and longer lasting.

CONCRETE RETAINING WALLS

Retaining wall is a structure that holds or retains soil behind it. There are many types of materials that can be used to create retaining walls like concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, rocks or boulders. Some are easy to use, others have a shorter life span, but all can retain soil. There are 5 benefits to installing a concrete retaining wall:
  • providing functional support for keeping soil in place,
  • preventing sink holes and eliminating the eye sore of dirt piles and hills
  • helpful in preventing flooding
  • reduces maintenance and prevents erosion
  • prevent damage to property or surrounding structures

A retaining wall is a protective structure, first and foremost. It is a structure that holds back soil from a building or structure. Retaining walls prevent down slope movement and provide support for vertical or near- vertical grade changes. Concrete retaining walls can serve aesthetic and landscape design functions as well. A retaining wall installation completed by our quality professionals from the East African Flooring company will enhance the value of one's home.

BASEMENT WATER PROOFING

No matter if your basement is finished or you use it as just a storage room, it is important for the structural integrity of your home to combat a wet basement problem as soon as you discover it. The main cause of basement water flooding and leakage is due to the groundwater swelling. This occurs when the water table has exceeded its high point and the Soil surrounding your home is unable to hold the extra water, causing a consistent runoff problem. If you have a wet basement due to groundwater swelling, your basement will be wet for a long period after each rain fall and there may be water bubbling up from the joints between the wall and floor. Many homes in Kenya and East Africa are not constructed with protection from high groundwater resulting in increase in water leakage and flooding.
At the East African Flooring Company we are perfectly suited to ensure that your basement becomes water proof by combining our years of experience and professionalism in water proofing surfaces.  We use a high range of water proofing materials that will ensure quality finish in record time.
